“Rx” or “R_x” is the symbol for a medical prescription.

A medical prescription is an order (usually in written form) by a qualified health care professional to a pharmacist for a medicine to be provided to their patient. A prescription is a legal document, which not only instructs in the preparation and provision of the medicine or device, but indicates the prescriber takes responsibility for the clinical care of the patient and the outcomes that may or may not be achieved.

Compounding is the process of mixing drugs by a pharmacist to fit the unique needs of a patient. For example, a patient allergic to the dyes used in a pill can obtain a doctor’s prescription for the necessary medicine to be compounded without the offending dye. Compounded medicines (called “compounds”) are custom-formulated to provide an alternative when commercially prepared medicines do not address your specific needs.

Regular pharmacies only offer medications already mass-produced on the market. Compounding pharmacies like Stevens’s specialize in making custom-tailored drugs, in addition to offering the same non-compounded and over-the-counter drugs that patients can obtain from regular pharmacies.

You must include the generic names of active ingredients and the strength/dose of each (i.e. mg or %). Also, you must indicate dosage form (i.e. suppository, transdermal gel, lollipop, etc.), quantity, and directions for use.
